Columbus Day :

Columbus Day is observed every year on the second Monday in October to celebrate the Christopher Columbus arrival in Americas. Christopher Columbus arrived in Americas on October 12 1492 but the holiday has been fixated to second Monday in October since 1971. Hawaii, South Dakota mark the day as Discoverer's Day and Native American Day respectively. Alaska does not observe Columbus Day.

Christopher Columbus :

Christopher Columbus was an explorer born in 1451 in Italy.He is credited with the Discovery of the Americas which led to the lasting European conquest of the Americas. Columbus set out to find the sea route to India by sailing Westward. Instead of reaching India as he had intended Columbus landed at Bahamas. Not knowing that he had landed in a new continent Columbus referred to the local american population at the time as indians.

Christopher Columbus made a total of four voyages. He died in 1506.
